HISTORY OF THE KELMAN FREEBOARD INDICATOR:
JEZEK TOOL & MACHINE CO. PRODUCED THE FIRST DRAFT & FREEBOARD INDICATOR OVER THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO, AT THE REQUEST OF CAPTAIN PETER B. KELMAN. UNTIL NOW, THE DRAFT & FREEBOARD INDICATOR HAS ONLY BEEN PRODUCED AND SOLD TO MARINE PROFESSIONALS BY WORD OF MOUTH ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS. WE ESTIMATE THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED DRAFT & FREEBOARD INDICATORS IN USE TODAY. MOST USERS HAVE STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT WORK WITHOUT IT, AND MANY COMPANIES REQUIRE IT. SHIPPING COMPANIES MAY INSIST THAT SURVEYORS USE THIS INSTRUMENT, & ALL BULK CARRIERS AND BARGES SHOULD HAVE ONE. SCRAP METAL RECYCLING COMPANIES USE IT TO ACCURATELY WEIGH THE AMOUNT OF METALS THEY ARE PURCHASING AFTER IT HAS BEEN LOADED ONTO A BARGE. THE KELMAN FREEBOARD INDICATOR IS THE ONLY COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MEASURING INSTRUMENT FOR BARGE & SHIP DRAFT SURVEYS.

We have used the draft / freeboard indicator for the past 30 years and have found it indispensable when calculating displacement tonnages on barges and bulk carriers. Accurate reading to a tenth of an inch are used in the computing weights and we feel that every bulk carrier should have one, with special emphasis on those vessels that may load or discharge at open anchorages.

Draft survey is a means of determining the weight of material loaded onto or discharged from a vessel by measuring the
displacement of water (Archimedes Principle). By reading the initial displacement of the vessel (prior to loading or prior to discharge
commencing) and then reading a final displacement (at the completion of loading or discharge), the weight of the material loaded can
be determined.
The accuracy of a weight determined by draft survey depends upon sea conditions at the time of loading or discharge (pitch and
swell) and the weight of the cargo loaded when compared to the total capacity of the vessel. This is where the Kelman Draft &
Freeboard Indicator is most valuable, because it is not affected by these conditions. The instrument is calibrated with the provided
tape measure to within 1/32" allowing for stretch in the fiberglass tape. This means that 500 tons of bulk cargo can be accurately
weighed within a couple hundred pounds. This has been especially important to scrap metal buyers, and marine surveyors have
reported to us that the savings to their customers can be as much as several hundred thousand dollars per load. Therefore, any
buyer of bulk products should hire only draft survey professionals who use the Kelman Freeboard Indicator.
